Workshop festival "material matters" took place in East London University. In the festival we organized the workshop of soil called "Space by Mud". We invited Mr. Naoki KUSUMI, japanese plater master, to teach japanese skill of plaster and the way to use quick lime and to guide the skill of pound mud to the participants.

In the short term of this workshop, the participants talked about design with the concept of the space that mudl can make thinking about beaty of texture of soil and strength of soil, and what's more, the participants shared the work from design session to construction. This workshop was designed to attempt make the participants feel the merit and demerit of mud with searching the possibility of mud and designing and construct it actually.

Design session

There began to be a discussion about the space by mud.

Model

This is the models and sketches that the participants made in the discussion. The models was made of the clay.

Plan

The participants went to the site in which the architecture is supposed to be built, and dicided the details of design.

Preparation of mud

The participants prepare the mud for pounding.

Work of pounding

Mixed mud was heaped up soil into the wooden frame and pound it.

Base of the dome

The participants weaveed branch together.

Brick

The brick that is parts of the chimney was made of mud.

Dry the brick

Mud was poured out into the wooden frame, then slipped wooden frame and dried up.

Built the base of the chimney

Base of the chimney was made of mud too. A man who mix mud in the a pail is the plaster master.

Lay bricks

The dried bricks was laid.

Preparation of slack lime

The plaster master mixed quick lime and water to prepare quick lime for finish the dome with it..

Finish the dome

The participants smear the sement as ground of dome, then finish the dome with slack lime.

Completion of the garden

The garden that can see from inside space of dome was finished.

The participants finished to brick the chimney and swear the dome.
