France : 13th international landspace festival
- Landscape of chaos -

Chaumont castle, well-known for the old castle, is on the border of the River Brois that go through the West of France. The garden in the castle was devided into 30 parts of section for exhibition of garden that is designed by many architects and landscape designers from all parts of the world who won the competition of the 13th international landscape festival.

In one of the section of the garden, the participants made the garden actually that is designed by themselves with the cooperation of japanese participants and students of Nanto University with thinking about the design on the basis of this landscape festival's concept "chaos".

We invited Mr. Naoki KUSUMI who is a plaster master to teach a skill of japanese plaster. Actually he gave a demonstration of smear plaster on the wall the participants made. Then the participants works with plaster.

Start making the garden

The participants and the lecturer Mr. Kinya MARUYAMA decided how they went ahead with this project.

Foundation work

The participants set boards to firm the ground.

At the corner of foundation, the participants pounded the ground carefully.

Making of dome section

First the participants stick pickets that is foundation of the dome into the ground. Then the dome was covered with timberings.

The timberings was coverd with a lot of earth.

Making of the ripple section

First, the participants even out the ground, then sprinkle the quick lime on the ground. Secound they laid the ground with soil. After the ground was mixed lightly,, the ground was pounded.

The sand was laid on the way as groundwork.

Marking the line

The line was marked to see where the wall is.

Lunch

Lunch is made of foods the participants brought. They ate lunch in the shade of a big horse chestnut.

Petanque

After the lunch, japanese participants and students of Nanto University played a game called "petanque".

The wall was made of gridded iron board and many types of stone. First two gridded irons board was set on a parallel with each other. then the stone was put between the boards.

The surface of the dome

The grass was laid on the surface of the dome.

Not only the wall of iron board but also the wall of timberings was set.

Completion of the dome

On top of the dome, many types of vegetation were planted.

Rest

After all the work of a day finished, the participants felt relaxed.

Inside the dome

The pickets were painted white, and the bench made of earth was hardened with plaster.

Complition of the ripple section

Finally, a table and the benches made of stone for a barbecue was set.

Foundations of wall

Not to fall down by the wind, the strength of the walls of the ripple section increased by setting stones and soils on the fondation of the wall.

Completion of the entrance

The soil painted on wall near the entrance was mixed the red pigment.

Sign of all participants

Finally, all participants and lecturer sign their name on the wall of the ripple section.
